Ilya is eighteen and alone, sitting in his cheap hotel room provided by his new team, the Boston Raiders.
The room itself is beige and boring, identical to every other hotel room he’s stayed in since landing in North America. The air conditioner hums, rattling on occasion. Outside the window, traffic moves in quiet ribbons of light.
On the desk: a workbook given by his team tutor, Shawn. Alongside it, Ilya's hand tapping a pen to the table like playing the drums, his tongue sticking out of his mouth slightly in concentration.
Present perfect. Past continuous. Articles. Always the fucking articles."What is article huh? Isn't it newspaper?"
He stares at the sentence he’s supposed to correct.
I have been live in Boston for three months.
He knows it’s wrong. He doesn’t know why.
He presses his palms flat on the desk and exhales slowly. His tutor earlier that afternoon had smiled politely while correcting him for the twentieth time. You need the “ing” ending, Ilya. Living. You are living.
He is living. Apparently incorrectly.
