Cole had been unable to resist the draw of the graveyard, he hadn’t been by to visit Gabe since he’d been buried. It was a remarkably peaceful evening, rather cool for mid-July, and low on humidity. The rich off-green of bluegrass rolls out ahead of him, broken by even, white tombstones, black engraving visible even in the dying light. There are a few other people visiting loved ones, a family speaks in hushed voices off to his right, a soldier cut clean in a uniform stands strong at a grave ahead of him, and on his left, several rows down, a figure cloaked in mourning blacks kneels at a headstone.

It’s over, Gabe is married. The thought doesn’t bring the sense of loss that he thought it would carry, truth be told, he lost Gabe a long time ago. Their relationship died under the pressure of Overwatch and political machinations, stamped out by the chain of command and the test of loyalty, hidden somewhere behind closed doors and closets. This might have been the final death keel, the nail on the coffin that was JackandGabe, but their romance died years ago.
Jack and Gabe's romance has died, but they keep crashing back together, a twisted song and dance of infidelity and heartbreak. -

Later, Harry would wonder if Malfoy regretted that first, surprised mutter after three days of hard-pointed silence. Later, Harry would wonder about his own lack of regret over looking up when he heard Malfoy’s voice. But that would come after everything had already happened, the way events always seemed to, when even a Time-Turner couldn’t change things. The shape of a path, as Harry knew very well by then, once walked, was a lot like a paper crane — unfolded and pressed flat, you could try to fashion it into something different, but the original creases would always remain.
