Summary
Eddie stubs his toe when he gets up. He works on the house alone until he can't stand it anymore and video calls Buck. Buck answers on the first ring, a wide grin on his face.
“Sorry about yesterday.”
Confused, Eddie says, “We didn't talk yesterday.”
Eddie lives the same day.

Summary
“You fucked him,” Buck says, easy as two plus two.
“I mean—” and Eddie cuts himself off immediately. He doesn’t know if correcting Buck and saying he fucked me is the best course of action at this point.
Buck stares, almost hopeful, as if expecting Eddie to follow it up with a negative on the accusation. I mean, that’s not what happened or, I mean, that’s clearly lotion on the bed, dumbass. Buck stares and stares, and the hope withers and dies, and he finally lets out a short, disbelieving laugh that doesn’t quite reach his eyes.
“Jesus, Eddie. So what— what, you fuck men now? Were you even gonna tell me?”
Or, Eddie sleeps with the Boston firefighter, and Buck takes it about as well as you'd expect. What's a little roughhousing between friends, anyway?

Summary
He wanted to know everything about the new kid, the same way he had wanted to know about volcanoes and daguerreotypes and people who went missing in national parks. He wanted the guidance counselor to make Eddie fill out a questionnaire that asked about earliest memories and daydreams and worst fears, and then he wanted to break into the counselor’s office and read it.
Buck and Eddie, caught up in each other since adolescence.

Excerpt from Chapter 1: sixteen years old
“You just asked that guy if he wanted to punch you?”
“It came up in conversation,” Evan said.
“Punching you?”
“Punching in general.” He smiled, a little relieved, when Eddie came back to him again, kneeling in front of him with a dusty green first aid kit in hand. “It was like, you know, practice.”
“Practice?” Eddie repeated, disbelieving. He was using wads of toilet paper to soak up the excess blood, and Evan couldn’t speak. Then the toilet paper was cast aside and replaced with wipes that made Evan’s skin burn. “Practice for what?”
“For—” Evan thought, hard. “Fistfights.”
“Fist…” Eddie huffed out an aborted laugh and Evan felt at peace, felt warm and like he hadn’t really fucked up so bad. “Evan, you’re like the sweetest guy I’ve ever met. You’re not getting into a fistfight. I will make a bet with you right now, and we can make good on it at the deathbed of whichever one of us dies first, that you will not in your whole life get into a fistfight.”
“Let’s die on the same day,” Evan said.
“Okay,” Eddie said, distracted and soft, the tone he used to humor his sisters. He was looking through the first aid kit, and then he had his hand on Evan’s jaw, holding him in place, as he pressed something over his nose.
