That’s how it always starts, his mum would tell him when he asked about it again during bedtime.
“You’ll only see colours once you meet them, then you’ll know. But you’re lucky, you have strings already. Most people don’t get those till they’re much older. You’re only 13, that means that no matter what, you’ll always know that there are people out there that are your soulmates.” She had told him when he was younger.
“The threads are only here to help push you in the right direction. They don’t need to tell you everything about yourself. Your soulmates and the people you come across in life…they will only be as important as you want them to be.” Their threads glowed stronger the longer she held his hand and she pulled away slowly before kissing him on the cheek, “Sleep now, Georgie.”

That’s how it went after all. When you see your soulmate for the first time you become able to see colour.
At least that’s what everyone says.
George wasn’t sure if he truly believed it. He had yet to see colour after all. His mother had also never seen it and ever since he was little he could remember her always rolling her eyes when she heard people talking about soulmates. Other than that he just wasn’t able to wrap his head around how something like soulmates could even be possible, there was no scientific basis to support the phenomenon, and even if so, just because people claim to be magically able to see colour doesn’t mean that they actually can.
Then George remembered, Dream could see colour.
or, George doesn't belive in soulmates until he's shown what colours actually look like

He tried to sit, too quickly for his weakened state, and swayed unsteadily. Feng Xin reached out on instinct, only for Mu Qing to jerk back from his touch, confusion sharpening to alarm.
“Don’t,” Mu Qing snapped. “Why are you so close? What is this place?”// Or, Mu Qing is poisoned by a venomous serpent ghost and loses his memory from the past eight hundred years, believing he's still in the Xian Le era. This triggers a series of situations and confessions.
