Summary
Padfoot thought in circles as his prison guards stole every moment of comfort he could possibly provide for himself deep in the halls of Azkaban. There was no legal or illegal way to escape this torturous purgatory, and Padfoot could only protect himself from madness by living his life in the form of a dog. It is as a dog that James found him. A six year old James Potter that should not exist and could not be there, standing alone in the hall facing his cell.
Azkaban was no place for any living soul, let alone a child already smaller than he should be. The cells were bare, the weather deadly, and he's seen more than one fellow prisoner die from malnutrition of both he body and the soul. With a new charge underfoot, Padfoot would do anything to keep his family safe, and he would starve himself to do it.
Harry, meanwhile, didn't know much about family or the strange prison he found himself in. All he knew is that monsters had taken him, and the only thing he could do was stay close to the dog that had kept him safe, emaciated and kinder than any dog he'd known before. It kept trying to give him all of its food, but Harry couldn't bare to see it die, and he would do anything to keep that from happening.
