Summary
Mary Bennet spent years loving Tom Hayward quietly. Quietly enough that nobody noticed. Not Tom, who only ever saw his best friend's younger sister. Not Jane, who never realised how carefully Mary stayed out of the way.
University changed everything. By the time Mary returned, she learnt how to take up space; she became someone she finally recognised in the mirror. Then she moved into the spare room of Tom’s flat.
Tom can't understand why the friend he remembers so fondly now keeps him carefully at arm's length. Mary can't understand why the boy from her past suddenly seems determined to learn every version of who she's become.
Some people grow apart. Others simply need to meet each other twice.
