Back to the game, back to Max. Richie has been to a few of Max’s games before, and he always hates it when they're all so close together. It feels like there are so many opportunities for somebody to be shoved too hard. Maybe somebody falls the wrong way, snaps a bone in two. That’s Richie’s worst case scenario, excluding the unthinkable.
Max is a little too involved in this scuffle for Richie to be comfortable. It doesn’t look like it’s supposed to be happening. This doesn’t look like friendly competition. Richie stands up and presses his hands against the glass, trying to take in a full breath and only managing shaky half ones.
An opposing player shoves Max hard and Richie feels his heart jolt. Josh tries to stifle a gasp. Everybody else stops talking to look. Max staggers a little, his disorientation apparent even from all the way down there. He doesn’t shove back. Richie’s heart would’ve swelled with pride if he’d had the time.
The same player shoves Max again. This time he crashes into the field like he weighs a tonne. He doesn’t get back up.
