or: Clark has grown used to kryptonite over the years. Within the walls of his and Bruce's home, in Bruce's arms, he forgot that kryptonite could be used to hurt him. To the point that he isn't expecting Lex Luthor to use it against him, especially not after so many years being behind bars. Bruce has made it so safe for him that he isn't expecting kryptonite to hurt. To harm. Until it does. And when surrounded with the one thing he has grown out of fearing and into trusting, there is no other name he'd call but Bruce's. The thing is, will Bruce even hear him?

Summary
Bruce wakes from a nightmare at 3am and does what he always does: works the problem.
The problem is that he's been in love with Clark Kent for sixteen months and treating it like a liability to be managed. The problem is that Clark knows. The problem is that Clark has been quietly adjusting what he reaches for in response, because Clark is constitutionally incapable of cruelty to the people he trusts.
Bruce has no contingency plan for this.
He makes one.

He didn't remember consciously making the decision to bite Kal. One moment he was all instinct, ready to shift in order to protect his mate and then he could taste Clark's blood. It was bitter on his tongue, the taste was probably due to the kryptonite entering his bloodstream. It didn't matter; his venom would eliminate all traces. After a few moments, the other stopped struggling; his venom was taking effect.
Bruce barely had a few minutes of peace before his worst nightmare unfolded.
Kal’s body shuddered and convulsed, a scream ripped his throat. The bite on his neck, which should have been healed by now, began to ooze. His veins began to bulge with a greenish color, and his hands tried to scratch the wound on his neck.
This wasn’t the normal reaction expected from a mate.

When Clark is injured after a battle, Bruce gives him the Mating Bite in a desperate attempt to save his life.
For shapeshifter mates, the bite's venom helps them heal; however, Clark's Kryptonian body seems to be allergic.
