“So I’m to be bait,” Akechi says flatly. “You’re serving me up.”
Ren can feel the grin on his face, and he can’t stop it. “I gotta open the store tomorrow, I only serve coffee.”
“Absolutely idiotic. Why would I agree to that?"
Ren shrugs one shoulder and leans back against the movie theater wall, smiling. He’s feeling light on his feet right now. It’s been a bad day, but the end is nice. “Call it penance.”
“Penance for what,” Akechi says.
His smile stays where it is as he glances away for a moment, then meets Akechi’s eyes again. “Being yourself.”

Summer vacation back in Tokyo was supposed to be two things: an exciting break from the mundanity of home, and a chance to see people he's missed so much it hurts. If he survives, Ren has good news for himself on both.

“Open the bag,” he says, stern and yet anticipatory as Akira dutifully pulls it from his shoulder and unzips it before them.
The officer steps forward instead, peering in for a moment, and reaches a hand inwards to root around before looking up.
“I need to drop these shirts off at the cleaners. Too nice for the laundromat, sadly,” Akira says.
The officer nods in what he thinks is solemn agreement, while the agent grits his teeth. Akira manages to suppress a smile.
“Akira Kurusu, correct?” the officer asks, flipping over a notepad, exchanging a clearly annoyed look at the agent as Akira hums in agreement. “And your occupation?”
This time, he can’t contain the grin. “I’m a househusband.”

“Excuse me,” Goro spoke up, trying not to startle the Shujin student. “Do you have a moment?”
The boy raised his gaze to look at him. Even without the big glasses, his long curly bangs would be covering half of his face. For a moment he just stared at Goro, then nodded, slowly.
“Ah, wonderful. Though considering what my business here is, it might not be so wonderful after all… Maybe I should introduce myself first though. I’m Akechi Goro, third year at Kosei High and an amateur detective.”
“...detective?”
“You’ve probably figured out why I’m here, right?” Goro smiled, trying to sound reassuring. “Don’t worry though, I’m not associated with the police. I’m an amateur after all. Would you be willing to answer a few questions?”
Goro is an amateur detective, trying to catch the Phantom Thieves without having any knowledge of the metaverse. Ren still finds him suspicious and decides to keep an eye on him though.

After Goro let out another irritated sigh, the barista of his favorite cafe finally couldn’t stop himself from breaking the silence.
“So, what was it this time, detective? Because something happened, right?” Ren asked. He couldn’t hide the hint of curiosity in his voice.
“Are you trying to tell me you haven’t seen the news today?” He hoped he didn’t sound as tired as he felt.
“Uh, no. I was actually waiting for you to tell me in person. It’s more interesting than these clickbait articles, you know?”
Goro Akechi is a young detective investigating a group of thieves who commit their crimes while dressed as fictional characters.
