“Fucking look at this shit,” Hayden pulls a rectangular object from the box, pointing it in Shane’s direction so he can clearly see the picture on the cover of the PlayStation game in his hands.
And now Shane is absolutely having some sort of panic-and-pheromone-induced fever dream, because why the fuck is he looking at Ilya Rozanov’s face, scowling at him right then and there in front of God, the Boston seaport that’s visible outside the hotel window, and his best friend Hayden Pike?!
“Whoever these fans are, they aren’t ones of yours,” Hayden sighs as if he’s actually disappointed in this mystery gift-giver.
“I - I don’t think I’ve seen this one,” Shane stammers out, his eyes still pinned on Ilya’s form in 4k HD photo relief grasped in Hayden’s fingertips - fingertips that Shane is suddenly, unreasonably, and very concerningly jealous of.

“Be careful,” Shane frets, one hand hovering over Ilya’s shoulder. “It’s icy, and I don’t want to be a widower.”
“Oh, we’d have to be much higher than this for the fall to kill me,” Ilya says, gaze still fixed on the cool black skyline. “At least seven stories.”
It’s not until much later, as the waitress is clearing the dishes from dinner, that Yuna finds herself wondering why Ilya knows exactly how high a fall needs to be in order to kill him.

“Can I ask you something?”
There’s a flash of what looks like fear that crosses Ilya's face before he sits back, his posture slightly closed off as his arms cross in front of his chest. “Depends on what it is,” he says, eyes somewhat steely.
She gets why people are intimidated by him on the ice.
“Why Ottawa?” She knows it’s something everyone has been asking, but she feels like it’s a legitimate thing to ask. “I mean, I get maybe you’re not happy in Boston, but you could have gone anywhere.”
“Not anywhere,” he says with an almost pout.
“But almost anywhere.”
He lets out a long breath of air through his nose. “I know it does not make sense, but it should not have to make sense to anyone but me.”
Kate tilts her head to the side, appraising him from across the table. “That’s not an answer.”
Ilya shrugs, but he holds her gaze steadily. “Maybe one day you will understand. But for now, know I am where I am supposed to be.”
And who is she to argue with that?
