Adora's had her mark for years and never seen anyone else with one like it - and neither to her enormous relief has the Amarand Institute, one of the only organisations that's done anything even approximating research on what a soulmark is, or what it does.

It's great that they're a punk rock band.
It's even greater that their vocalist is a girl Catra's been crushing on for literal years.
Just a shame Adora Gray is straight.

Adora wakes at dawn to a weight on her, and it's not Melog on her feet.
Green eyes loom over her.
She feels her breath try to go, but she's been working on this for eight, nine months now, and thanks her body for trying to protect her, and sets the panic aside, and waits for the situation to cohere.
Oh. There's a sound. Somewhere between a purr and a snarl, rolling, repeating.
"Catra...?" she manages, and the hands on her shoulders tighten.

Catra doesn't mean to be predictable.
But then her mother dies, the house up by the Ashokan needs to be emptied, and the old Steinway's lurking in the atrium just daring her to play it again. One of the movers is strong, blonde, hasn't heard of the band before, and knows the name of every songbird by the reservoir.
So of course she starts writing a new album.
