    Summary

Ilya asked Shane’s father while Shane and his mother were talking outside: “Is boyfriends correct? Lovers is incorrect, but I am not sure what is correct.”

“Well,” Mr. Hollander said. “‘Lovers’ is usually used for, hm, a mistress or an affair. Something kind of sordid. Though--you would say Romeo and Juliet is a play about two lovers,” he said. He paused his knife on the chopping board. “Somehow that’s right and using it for real people isn’t right. English is a damn funny language, Ilya."

“Yes,” Ilya said from the bottom of his heart.

“I saw this boy at Juniors. He was rounder in the face, cuter, but those eyes, that mouth. Delicious. We are both expected to be top draft picks. Rivals, some say. I told my manager, hey, what if we do a dramatic face-off commercial? Then I can see this beautiful boy again. CCM thinks that sounds great and brings him to me,” Ilya said.

“Like you’re a fucking mob boss,” Shane said.

“No mob. I just make very good plans,” Ilya said. “And then I saw the beautiful boy in the shower…”

Shane looked up and narrowed his eyes. “How long were you waiting for me to get down to the showers? Were you hovering in a towel like a creeper?”

Ilya touched his chest innocently: me?

“You were. You came in ten seconds after I did,” Shane said, eyes filled with suspicion.

    Ilya spread his hands.

“And stared at me, like a creeper,” Shane said.

“Yes, I absolutely intended to look at your dick. You liked it.”

Hollander was such a good sort, right? He wanted to play clean, fair hockey, like any good and polite Canadian boy.

So it had been a bit of a shock for Jake to witness Prince Charming of Hockey himself make eye contact with one of his players and say “Hey, fourth-line-left-wing, did you see if Theriault made it to his office yet?” in a completely casual tone of voice, like it was a normal and acceptable thing to do.

“Yeah,” said the poor guy, continuing to lace his skates. “He’s there.”

“Thanks,” said Shane, nodding at Jake as he left.

    “What the fuck,” said Jake.

“Don’t worry about it, man,” said the fourth—Aubrey Williams, Jesus Christ. “I’m flattered he remembered what position I play.”

    Summary

When Shane Hollander looks into the future he sees— not a flat sheet of ice, not that, not anymore, but something equally as empty.

His backup plan was always to go to university. He hadn't thought he'd ever need it, not really. Especially not near the end, when everything felt so certain. But his grades were good, his mom made sure of that, so when he woke up in the hospital he already knew what he was going to do next. But after?

There's a standard path people take, he knows, that comes after school. But when he tries to picture it, slot himself into the picket fence and the corporate overhead fluorescents, it disappears. Like it was never going to be real at all.

(Or: after ending up at a jazz bar to celebrate the end of finals season, Shane Hollander finds himself where he never thought he'd be— in the orbit of NHL superstar Ilya Rozanov.)

    Summary

The only trick is to have no fear, and even less fear than that the more trouble one is in. Ilya cannot teach that to a man who has directed his energies into becoming, not like a saint, but like a painting of a saint, all dripping in symbolism: the way the robe drapes here, yes, that is on purpose, and the angle of the light, the patron’s face in the crowd, the instrument of the martyrdom in his hand and the fruit in the bowl on the table, all arranged except when—

    Summary

“And you’re sure there’s nothing for you?” David says suddenly. “You’re not—you’re feeling okay? You’re not sick? Shane wouldn’t have any reason to think that you’re sick?”

Ilya blinks and turns to him. “I am fine. Totally fine. Better than fine, even, before today.”

    “It’s just—Shane’s acting like you’re dying, Ilya.”

“Not as far as I’m aware,” says Ilya. “And I do not think he would learn this before me.”

The summer before Ilya joins the Centaurs, Shane wakes up nervous. It doesn't stop from there.
