Grace knows the chances he’ll survive and live a happy, fulfilling life are so comically low it would be easier for him to win the lottery seven times in a row. But he still allows himself to hope he might be able to go home after this is over, after he figures out why Tau Ceti's star isn’t dying.
If he doesn’t hope, it’s easy to panic, and that isn’t productive to the mission. Besides, there’s another thing that motivates him apart from Stratt’s faith and the knowledge Earth’s fate is in his hands. It’s a bit unexpected, so much so that the realization had made him laugh when it crossed his mind for the first time— it was so sudden and so correct it didn’t even feel like it had come out of his head:
At least there are no spiders in space.
Or,
One severely arachnophobic Ryland Grace meets a tarantula made out of rocks.

Ryland Grace has never been great at relationships, or social cues, which leads him to accidentally give Rocky an Eridian courting gift. More issues arise once the two finally reach Erid and Grace meets Adrian. Some angst because its a requirement in this fandom, all science and culture for Eridians is made up please don't read too deeply into any science or space stuff I am doing my best.

Summary
Dr. Grace is in for a long haul on the way to planet Erid. Unwilling to enter another coma to preserve his own mental health, he plans to spend four concious years aboard the Hail Mary for Rocky's sake. But as anxiety and hopelessness surrounding Grace's past shortcomings and his uncertain fate set in, it's going to take a lot to pull him through.
Maybe a certain alien friend can help, if Grace would let him.
