“Any other questions?” She’s convinced them, she’s sure of it. They will turn their heads the other way and pretend that they couldn’t do anything about it to assuage their guilt. Good. Eva can carry it for them.
It is in that moment that Dr. Grace walks in to the room, rubbing his right wrist. He wasn’t even wearing handcuffs, please.
“Uh, hey guys.” He waves sheepishly. The rest of the members of the group rush to him, pat him on the shoulder, check his body for injuries. Honestly! The worst she was going to do was drug the man!
“Dr. Grace, who let you out?”
His sheepish smile falls when he addresses Eva.

Andrea Caceres is going to space. Dr. Ryland Grace is rescued from the cell that Director Stratt kept him in only two days before launch. The rest of the Vat find out that he was being forced into space. Things spiral pretty quickly for Director Stratt after that.

Suddenly she laughs, a quick and pained burst of hysteria. Then, her elbows come up to rest on the table and she lets her head fall to her hands.
“God, you know what he was yelling at us, Eva?” She gives another short laugh, though it’s muffled. “‘You’re murdering me! You’re killing me! It’s murder!’”
Grace does not appreciate that Stratt’s voice for him is high-pitched and whiny. He hears Dimitri laugh quietly behind him, the big traitor.
“Yeah. Well, if he didn’t get on that ship he’d be murdering billions. And if I didn’t put him on that ship, I would be murdering billions. No, but they all got to cry and tell stories about him. But none of them got videos of his students saying good-bye, did they? Nobody hunted down his favorite university science professor, did they? Or his doctorate advisor? No. They all just cried and cried and drank all my alcohol.”
_Captain Doctor Ryland Grace comes across an old video filmed one month after the launch of the Hail Mary in which Director Eva Stratt vents about her problems to...herself. Twenty-six years later, the video is watched for the first time.

Summary
“Dr. Grace? Would you collect my body when I die?” He flinches hard. Even after all this time, he doesn’t like talking about death.
“Um, uh, why?”
“I don’t want them to have it. My corpse.” She says this with no emotion. It makes him want to fight somebody and flee at the same time. What can he do, say no?
“I’ll make the arrangements.” Grace nods at her. She tilts her head. “I’ll have someone pick up your body, alright? We’ll have a funeral.”
“Cremate me, please. You don’t even need to come pick up the ashes. Just make sure they don’t get their hands on my body.”
“Oh-okay, sure, Eva.” This is the most coherent she’s been during the whole visit. Her dead eyes, the request to not leave her corpse behind—it’s all very unsettling. He doesn’t run down the hallway, but it’s a close thing.
__Dr. Ryland Grace has been back on Earth for eleven years. Director Eva Stratt has been in prison for all of those eleven years and more. Nobody is surprised when Dr. Grace refuses to visit her in prison.
