“Carlos, these are… some of my friends from New York,” he says, trying to sound assuring as he stumbles over finding the words for what to call these people. His cheeks turn hot and flush.
“Wow, okay,” Carlos says, blinking at him for a moment and then looking back at everyone. “What brings you to Austin?”
“Well, I’m glad you managed to get a spot in this place because that’s a story I’m gonna need another drink for.”

Summary
“Grace and Judd brought the flowers. I think the cookie card came from Mateo, Marjan, and Paul. The whale one was from Nancy and Tim. And I think Michelle sent that pink one in the back there.”
“Wow,” TK exhales. They’ve come back to visit now that he’s awake, but all of this was here before then and his dad told him about how everyone camped out in the waiting room until the hospital staff all but forced them to go home. He guesses the excess downtime while they waited warranted a few trips to the hospital gift shop. TK also knows that Carlos was here that night, and casually, he asks, “What about that hedgehog?”
Or, there’s an unclaimed gift sitting at TK’s bedside when he wakes up from his coma. That stuffed hedgehog becomes an integral part of his and Carlos’ story.
