When Carlos seeks his hero out to thank him, TK is going through a nuclear-bad breakup and back living with a father who is deeply affected by 9/11. But by letting Carlos into his life, maybe it’s TK who will feel himself falling.

Sometimes, he can feel the phantom bruise of the Narcan on his thigh, the light of himself blinking chaotically before snapping back on, how he’d sobbed against his terrified dad. But that’s not all there is anymore. He can still feel Carlos clinging to him as he was lifted to safety. He can still feel Carlos inside him, from nights ago, the angle he found, the way he moved. “Well,” Carlos said, voice low like he was sharing a secret. “TK’s brave like the bluebonnets. He always keeps trying, even when it’s really hard. No matter what, he always chooses kindness. That’s what makes him so special. He blooms where he’s planted.”
“And," he added, winking playfully at TK. "He’s beautiful.”
“TK’s a brave flower,” Jonah whispered with enchantment.
“The bravest.” Carlos nodded. “He’s my favorite flower.”

TK’s life has always been defined by his dad’s decision to be the person running into the danger. After their move to Austin revealed TK had a 4 year old daughter, TK has been grappling with his dad’s choices, and his own. A suspension that turned into a leave of absence let TK spend time getting to know his daughter but, now, TK has to face the thing he’s been avoiding for far longer than 8 months: the firehouse and the relationships with his father housed within it.
Carlos has spent years wondering if the man he’s become has ever made his father proud. The last year has amplified the cracks that have existed in Carlos’ relationship with his dad for years, but his dad is trying. And Carlos? Well, he can’t seem to stop making choices he knows his dad would hate. While the past year was difficult, the coming year threatens to unravel everything.
TK and Carlos’ relationship with their dads isn’t the only thing they have to contend with. The stressors of work, dating, and being a dual first responder family are piling up, and when the lines between personal and professional start to blur, it threatens to send their world up in flames.

He can’t do this. He can’t do any of it. But only one option means keeping TK. If he’s going to suffer either way. If this embryo isn’t just something that can potentially destroy them but something that has already destroyed Carlos, then he picks the option that lets him keep TK, even if TK wants Carlos to pick the option that lets Carlos keep himself.
He could be not pregnant by Tuesday.
It is horrifyingly selfish, he thinks, to choose to bring life into the world for none else than because it would destroy you to watch your partner if you chose the other option. But he’s definitely not the first person who has done that. He wouldn’t be the last.

Carlos finds out he’s pregnant and then pressures himself into staying pregnant. It goes about as well as expected.
