Summary
Shane would never, in a million fucking years, admit this to anyone, but: he has this… problem with treats. A problem with food in general, maybe. His mind is sticky to begin with, gluing itself to all sorts of things he can’t shake: numbers, rules, embarrassing memories. But it’s really, really sticky with food. He’s tried a couple of times to bring snacks into the house, a bag of gummy bears, a box of croissants, that kind of thing. The result is torture. Some parasite burrows into his typically well-governed neural pathways and diverts them into tight loops such that he can’t think about anything else until the treats are gone. Gone means devoured. Devoured means Shane, wild and frightened, in the pantry at midnight in nothing but his boxers, full and aching.

Shane moves in with Ilya and must adjust to the sudden availability of snack food.

A response to this prompt an anon left me on tumblr:
"Ilya eating so much beyond his limit that he actually might be sick. Shane a good mix of "I told you so", tender caretaking, and fighting back that he's still kind of turned on by this considering Ilya is uncomfortable."--
Shane feels conflicted about his attraction to Ilya's weight gain, eating habits, and difficulty controlling his appetite. Things come to a head when yet another of Ilya's attempts to diet backfires and he ends up eating past the point of discomfort.

No, that’s not fair. It’s not Shane’s fault that he has so much more to lose. It’s not Shane’s fault that his star has just continued to rise, that he’s thirty-six and still hasn’t hit the ceiling of his career; Montreal’s hero of a captain with the most Cup wins in history, 200 pounds of lean Canadian hockey machine.
Ilya, on the other hand, is the washed-up, overweight, has-been captain of the worst team in the league. The only thing he possibly has left to lose is weight and Christ knows that’s not happening any time soon.
or: AU where Ilya gets injured after joining the Centaurs, gains a lot of weight, and Shane delays coming out. Ilya can't help thinking those two things are related.

It wasn’t like he had to throw up, Ilya reasoned. It was just a bad habit, and he quit those all the time. But he was leaving the cottage in two days, and the thought of packing up this life with Shane into his carry-on and flying back to Boston alone was tying him in knots. He was just stressed, and vomiting made him feel lighter. He didn’t need to, though.
Or, a study of Ilya's recklessness and unhealthy coping as a foil to Shane's ED-coded behaviors, where he has his own disordered habits. He has it under control, until he doesn't. This work is fully finished, just updating as I edit :)
