Inside Carlos’s head are two voices. The sensible one, telling him to slow down, to take things easy. He doesn’t know anything about TK, really, other than the fact that he just moved to Austin with his father, and that he’s not looking for a relationship. The other one, the louder one, screaming at him to do whatever it takes to keep this man in his life, to make some kind of grand romantic gesture. It’s telling him that surely, he can’t be the only one feeling this way, like their meeting that rainy night was kismet.

When they were finally able to bring Jonah home from the boarding school in Switzerland, TK was so excited to have someone else to share his love for Lou with. By everyone’s account, Jonah was as much of an animal lover as his older brother. But, when TK finally took Lou out of his enclosure and let Jonah pet him, something unexpected happened. Lou, in an uncharacteristic act of aggression, opened his mouth, lunged forward, and chomped down on Jonah’s tiny index finger.

It’s his way of communicating with people, of seeing deep within their souls, and to tell a story through one single bite. Jonah doesn’t call them “Dad”, or “Papá”, or any other iteration of the word. Not to their faces, anyway. By the time he was old enough to really understand his unconventional family, they’d been TK and Carlos to him for so long, it just felt weird to change that. But in his heart, and when anyone else asks about his parents, their faces are the only ones that come to mind. TK and Carlos always make sure to remind him about his other parents, the ones whose genes he inherited, but if Jonah’s being completely honest, he doesn’t remember them. It’s well past 2am by the time Carlos has deemed the loft clean enough for bedtime, and TK is absolutely spent. Okay, maybe they could’ve had this done a bit faster if he weren’t so distracted by how good Carlos looked in that cream, ever-so-slightly sheer shirt, but how could anyone blame him for that? Besides, he didn’t even do a fraction of the things he really wanted to do to his husband, so he thinks he deserves some sort of an award for that.
“Okay, TK,” he hears Carlos’s voice booming from the other side of the partition between their kitchen and dining room. “I think we can leave the rest for tomorrow morning.”
“Finally,” TK whines, “my husband can pay attention to me now.”

”Just want to make sure we’ve got our facts correct,” he replies, pressing a soft kiss to TK’s cheek, laughing.
