Summary
Five years ago, Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov quietly went their separate ways. They handled their heartbreak differently. Shane cut off his family and friends and focused only on hockey, not that it helped, his game has totally fallen apart. Ilya had the support of the Centaurs, even if they didn't know why they were supporting him.
But when Ilya announces his retirement at the end of the next season, it shakes Shane back to reality. He has one season left to play against the man he still loves; and then, would he ever see him again? As Shane starts to piece his life back together, the biggest missing piece is still Ilya.
Ilya had planned to just enjoy the last season he'd play of professional hockey and obviously try to win another cup. But when Shane reaches back out, he has much more to consider. He never expected to talk to Shane again, but he can't deny that it's everything he's wanted in the last five years.
Can they salvage what they had? Should they even try? How can Shane and Ilya be a part of each other's lives again?

He tries not to get ahead of himself, tries to stay focused and go game by game, reminds himself that building up a team takes time and several seasons, but god. He wants this legacy: for himself, for Ottawa, for Ilya. For both of them and everyone else.
Which is why, goddamnit, now is not the time to crash out over fantasies of Ilya working his whole hand down to the wrist into Shane’s ass and fucking him on his fist. And yet. The car went quiet at that. When Shane looked up, Ilya was looking out the window, jaw set.
"S' something wrong?" Shane asked. He ran his fingertips along the warm skin of Ilya's forearm.
Ilya turned back to face him, expression softened. Whatever pensiveness had taken hold of him was gone.
"No. Everything is perfect."
After sixteen seasons of professional hockey, Shane Hollander retires from the NHL in the interest of starting a family with his loving husband. It's maybe a little earlier than he would've liked, but with his thirty-five year old knees beginning to protest, it makes sense.
He's happy. He and Ilya have been working towards this for nearly a decade.
He's also terrified, wondering if this is the biggest mistake of his life, and thinking that maybe he should take it all back. But mostly, he's happy.

Carlos remembers the way the world felt like it was swallowing him whole when TK left that night, unable to get the smell of red snapper out of his nose for what felt like weeks afterward. Carlos compares it to the way it felt to feed him, just now, and how it’s like time stopped and started all over again, because this is what his grandparents did for each other, what his parents still do for each other, and he never thought he’d get it for himself.

TK swoons when he discovers a sentimental scrapbook full of notes he and Carlos have left for each other – but he also finds a book of poems that closeted teen-Carlos wrote about his struggles, including a few dedicated to his high school crush. An adorably mortified Carlos recalls the stir he caused when he was published anonymously in the high school paper, and everything he went through to write his wedding vows for TK years later. With TK as a hype-man, maybe Carlos can embrace his creative side again.
“The third time we hooked up, I asked if you wanted tea and cookies. You looked at me like I was so weird.”
