Amidst the beeping of hospital machines and blinding white of hospital linens, 18-year-old Shane Hollander wakes up.
He feels weird, wrong, different. His body feels fuller, thicker. He can feel the IV drip in his wrist, acutely. He wants to rip it off.
But most of all, he feels older.
Like, at least 10 years older. Which is weird, because he only had a little fall on the ice, nothing that should make his head throb in this manner.
In a very short amount of time, a doctor is standing in front of him, asking him too many questions.
“Mr. Hollander, where do you remember being last?”Shane grimaces. He searches for it, in his mind, wading through the fog until he grasps onto something. “The Prospect cup. I fell, but I feel like it wasn’t that bad, to give me a headache like this.”
The doctor furrows his brow.
“What year is it, Mr. Hollander?”
Shane tells him, confidently, “2008.”
“Do you remember anything about Ilya Rozanov?”
Shane can’t help but flush, remembering what had happened just last night.“He’s a good player, but he’s very cocky. I don’t like him that much.”

Hayden was looking down the street, panic and worry etched across his face. His little daughter, she couldn’t be more than eight years old, was in his arms, blood running down her leg, her little pink socks getting little spots of red where the blood was reaching them. Tears were running down her face, her little sobs breaking Ilya’s heart.
At the sound of the door opening, Hayden’s head whipped back around. For the briefest moment, he had seemed entirely relieved, but that look was soon replaced with one of total shock.
“What the fuck are you doing here?” Hayden hissed.

The cold bit her skin with an addicting kind of pain, one that was dulled by cigarettes and sharpened again with hunger pains as her father, Andrei Rozanov, again lost his money to coke. “She’s not even in the country,” he admitted. “And I can’t bother her after ruining her vacation last year.”
Ilya’s lips twitched, something akin to respect showing for a moment. “Alright, fine,” he muttered, sighing. “I take them.”
He blinked, scoffing. “What?” he responded in confusion.
“The kids, I take your kids,” Ilya clarified, gesturing between them. “How long will you be gone, a week? Two?” He leaned over, sorting through the other cart without permission to look at the snacks in comparison to what he already had at his house.
