Uther needs a moment to work through all that.
“Romantically,” he clarifies. “I meant romantically.”
(Uther learns that Merlin is the son of the last dragonlord. He sends him away with Balinor in exchange for a promise that Kilgharrah will not attack Camelot again, and in doing absolutely shatters Arthur's heart. In a flare of fatherly regret, he does what he feels he must to soothe Arthur's distress, which includes trying to figure out what it is that Arthur likes so much about Merlin in the first place.)

He can’t stand having to swallow another tragedy. There are already so many that he keeps gilded around his heart. He wears loss like a second skin. If he believed in God, he knows he’d be praying please, and not again, don’t steal someone I love from me again, but faith is the thing just outside his reach, pulled farther and farther away with each goodbye he suffers through.

i think andrew is so well-fleshed-out in this, in a way we dont really get in canon (duh, bc there's no pov)

this is.... so incredibly masterful that i am struggling for words
neil's quiet and accepting descent into the 'garden' is so incredibly well-written -- this is the first time i have seen hanahaki where the element of mulch and actual rot is incorporated, it is so fitting and beautifully done
i love how andrew is written when viewed from others' povs -- everyone knows except neil, and they just let them be while being oh so worried at the same time
honestly gorgeous -
