“It had been like this all summer. Ever since Mike had come to California and Will had to watch as he completely bypassed his so called ‘best friend’ and instead paid attention only to El, kissing her so often it was almost as if he knew what it did to Will. But it was there. In the stolen glances from opposite ends of the room, in the fleeting touches - Mike’s hand on the base of Will’s neck, gently guiding him forwards, or Will going to pass Mike something, but neither pulling away soon enough for that to be all it was - and in the longing gaze Will couldn’t help but direct at Mike, the same look he had almost thought he’d seen reflected in his best friend’s own eyes.”

Or, Mike and Will finally have THAT conversation in the back of Argyle’s pizza van.

“Mike stared into Will’s chocolate eyes, so close to his own. His gaze was pulled down, if only for a second, before flicking back up again. Will noticed.
”Okay, so you’re a natural,” Will smirked. “Lets give you a challenge,”
Mike watched in confusion as he produced three more cans from the bag by his feet, setting them up with the others in a tower now six cans large.
“You have to shoot the cans,” Will began as he made his way back over to Mike. “And I have to try and distract you,”
Mike sucked in a breath as Will snaked his arms fully around his middle.
”O-okay,” He stuttered. He could feel Will nodding.
”Starting now,” Will said.”___________
Or, Will teaches Mike how to use a gun.

“Are you still thinking about her?”
Mike furrowed his eyebrows.
“Who?”
“Eleven. Do you miss her?”
Where was this coming from.
“Of course I miss her. I’m worried for her. We all are,”
“I mean,” Will pauses. Although Mike can’t see his expression from their position, he’s spent enough time over-analysing every one to be able to tell Will was trying to figure out how to word something. “Do you miss being her boyfriend,”
This only confused Mike further.
“Well, we’ll still be friends after this, I hope.”
”Well, yeah but…” Will continued. Mike waited patiently.
”You must know how it feels to want… more than friendship,”____
Or, Mike and Will talk about crushes and Mike gets jealous, until he runs into Will in the corridor and everything becomes clear.

“Movement beside him. Mike rolled suddenly towards Will, using one hand to prop himself up next to Will’s head. His face hung over Will’s before the shorter boy could even turn to look.
”Guess what,” Mike said, grinning. It took Will a few moments to reply because oh my god he’s so close and his hair is falling into his eyes and are my cheeks as red as they feel and-
“Wh-what?” Will asked, more out of instinct than actual coherent thought.
”I can see the stars,” He said it like it was a secret. Will was intrigued.
”Huh? Where?” He strained to look past Mike’s head and back up at the sky, but all he could see was murky cloud. Mike’s fingertips on his cheek caused his mind to blank.”__________
Or, Will takes Mike stargazing and blames himself when it’s cloudy, but Mike’s universe is lying right next to him.
