“I— Yeah,” I cut whoever was speaking off, my voice sounding strange and distant, like I was hearing myself from ten feet away. “I’m fine, I just have to… I think I need… uhm…”
I was rising to my feet, then, my thoughts blurry and all over the place. As I shuffled out from under the table, I moved too fast and hit the edge of it with my knees. It was a terrible idea — pain flashed through my hips and spine without the help of my cane, which I vaguely registered leaving on the ground as I pushed away from the conference table, took one more look at the people gathered around it…
And broke out into a run.
Or: Grace returns to Earth but has trouble adapting to humans again. Humans who stare, and scrutinise, and can read his thoughts at a glance.

It was a picture of the inside of an apartment—a room in my apartment, I quickly realized. I could see a large bookshelf in the corner, filled with both fiction and scientific texts on molecular biology. A small coffee table and couch. A singular potted plant sitting on the windowsill. But there was no evidence of another heartbeat present within the walls; no framed family photos on the walls, no silly macaroni art stuck to the fridge in the distance, no dog or cat bed lying around. It was a place that had been lived in, but was ultimately empty of life.
Something inside of me was aching, ringing hollow.
Or: Ryland thinks about his life on Earth.

“Yes,” Rocky says eventually. “Human music bad bad bad. But has been long time since Rocky has heard other music.”
That makes something hurt in the back of Ryland’s throat, a sick feeling right to the pit of his stomach. Maybe it’s cruel, to dangle something like this in front of Rocky, a crude approximation of what his home must be like, sounds constantly, chirping song a present language instead of a lonely whisper. Maybe it’s cruel, still, because the background instruments and high-pitched wordless belts must hold some kind of meaning to Rocky, must be ascribed to an unknown word Ryland might never learn.
Though – he’s selfish, because he wants to share music with Rocky. And maybe it isn’t all cruel. Maybe it’ll be nice, to hear something that is some kind of taste of home, after so so long of only hearing your own chirps and whistles, and then the static feedback of the communication device.
Ryland swallows. “Wait until you hear The Sex Pistols.”
“Why are guns reproducing, question?”
