    Summary

“Thank you Link, Hero of Hyrule.”

Her voice flows over him, filling him the way it had so many times since he first heard it in the Shrine of Resurrection. He forces himself to look at the princess he fought so hard to retrieve.

She lowers her head, clasping her hands against her chest. “May I ask…do you really remember me?”

She meets his eyes again, and something inside of him cracks. With pity. With pain. Because, as he stares at Princess Zelda, descendant of the goddess, the one who has guided him and called to him all this time, he knows he is about to break her heart.

Because he does not remember her at all.

    ----

After the defeat of Calamity Ganon, Link and Zelda set off to unite Hyrule, despite the fact that Link does not have his memories, and Zelda is still recovering from her imprisonment in the castle. Along the way, they wrestle with their relationships with each other, themselves, and the people they want to protect.

This story serves as a loose connection between Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, exploring the relationship between Link and Zelda in the wake of disaster.

    Summary

"Zelda’s quiet, like she’s allowing the words to echo and reverberate in her head. Finally, she says “Do you regret it? Not dying?”

There’s a cold breeze coming in, now. He feels it on his skin and closes his eyes. Does he regret it? It’s not as if he had a say in it, thanks to Hylia, Zelda, Ganon, the Sheikah… whoever it was to blame. “Do you regret it?” He asks in return. “Not letting me die? Do you regret it?” It comes out more bitter than he thought it would, but he realizes he doesn’t really care. He feels a familiar, age-old tiredness within him. He’s not sure why, but he knows it should be there."

    Summary

"The little differences began to slip through the cracks as they slowly grew more comfortable around each other after so long apart.

Everything he did, every swing of his sword, every step, every breath, seemed to drip with a sense of hesitancy that she would have never expected from him. One hundred years ago, the rush of a fight seemed like it was the only thing that lifted the weight of his burdens from his shoulders. Now, Zelda can see it: there is no joy in his movement.

Two, he does not sleep. It seemed as though he was content to simply sit next to her as she slept. What he did during that time, she did not know. All she knew was that he was awake when she fell asleep, and that he was always waiting for her to wake up."

After spending so long trapped in a state between life and death, Zelda is ready to move on. She longs for normalcy, and is ready to spend the rest of her life reconnecting with Link. She's sure that, aside from the first few hiccups along the way, things between them can go back to how they used to be.

    It's never that easy.

    Summary

"—So…” Daruk coughed. Revali’s sharp gaze snapped over to him. "Turns out he’s the chosen hero of the legends.”

Revali sputtered into a stunned silence.

“Bullshit, that’s impossible!” His feathers rustled as he balked. “He was sent by the Demon King!”

“We know that, but— he has the mark of the goddess on his hand,” Urbosa snapped. “The rest of us saw it. If you don’t believe it, you can see for yourself.”

The Rito didn’t even deign to give the unconscious swordsman a glance.

“Hero or not, we’re not letting him off the hook just like that,” Revali’s voice climbed an octave. “He’s too dangerous— we saw what he’s capable of. We have to kill him while he’s still weakened!”

“We aren’t killing him,” Zelda asserted again. This time, she lifted her eyes. Her voice held a note of cautiousness, but it was still unshakeable.

“If we’re to even hope to defeat the Demon King, we need the hero on our side. We have to take him with us.”

    Summary

She watches him land the final blow on whatever monster had gotten too close to town that night. She doesn’t get a good view in the dark, only hearing a horrible ugly wail and a wet thud as it collapsed onto the muddy field, and then the lightning illuminates him for a terrible moment. His torso is all red and blue, bloods mixing into a terrible purply-brown. The sword gleams unblemished in his hand, but his posture is weak, exhausted.
“Are you alright?” She asks him, gut twisting at the sight of him. Black eye, gash sweeping from temple to cheekbone, split lip. Blood mats in his blond hair, but he smiles when he sees her.
“Finally got your attention?” He wheezes, voice crackling with what must be blood in his throat. His blue eyes sparkle.
She throws his arm over her shoulder to help him up, pulling him back to her home across town. She plays dumb. Maybe he won’t know, doesn’t feel the same pull in his stomach that she does, the tingle where his skin brushes against hers.
“There are plenty of prettier girls in town who will fix you up better than I can, if you want me to drop you off,” she says.
He huffs out a strained breath, leaning his head onto her shoulder. “No. You can’t run this time.”
