Summary
Violet is struggling with staying in college and also taking care of her sister, Jinx. She pushes everyone away who tries to help her, and even goes as far as to move her and her sister into a different town. This ends up being both the best and worst choice of her life, she becomes a pit fighting and makes a lot of money. At the same time, she has to come home with bruise and scars. She still manages to make it to school on time no matter what situation she’s in.
Caitlyn is struggling with a bad divorce with her ex-wife, Maddie. Maddie decides to take Caitlyn’s kids and only lets her visit every other month, Caitlyn slowly becomes more and more depressed with the realization that she has completely lost everybody. Although, she still sits on a pile of money even when times get tough.
Violet meets her professor Caitlyn, in her Discrete Mathematics class. Caitlyn becomes drawn to Violet, and is quite fond of her appearance. Will Violet allow Caitlyn to be close with her? Or will she shut her out like she does with everyone else?
Or
Caitlyn tries to become Violet’s sugar mommy but fails almost all the time.

Vi holds the book up, “Since you don’t like this one, you, uh, got any recommendations for books you like more?”
Her seat neighbor’s smile returns then, her eyes brightening. “Yes, I, uh,” she pauses and bites her lip, her smile still breaking through as her blush deepens. She looks down at the space between their seats as she begins to speak, “I’ll give them to you in exchange for your number.”
The eye contact returns then and Vi feels her face grow red and hot again, it’s probably getting close to the shade of her own hair, but she’s smiling nonetheless. “You got anything to write on?”

Caitlyn and Vi are recent college grads living in New York City in the late nineties, they meet by chance and quickly become enamored with each other. But as their relationship develops, cracks begin to show: neither of them are out to their families and they're both struggling with their identities and their hope that they will get the future that they always dreamed of. When these cracks begin to force them apart, they must face the reality that they may never get everything they wanted. And the question of whether their love is worth the sacrifice.

After suffering a loss and being consumed by grief, Vi is forced to confront the ghosts of her past. Returning to her hometown, Vi must face the reality that her sadness and resentment run much deeper than she cares to admit.
Her return will be marked by truths to be uncovered and lies to be exposed, and at the center of it all is the weird girl with midnight blue hair who keeps showing her glimpses of a kinder world.
