“Were you thinking of also bringing clothes?” Shane asked, glancing into Ilya’s suitcase.
“Do you think we will need them?”
“I’m just saying you might want the option of going outside,” Shane said, dropping a kiss on Ilya’s shoulder and wandering into the closet.
Ilya was obviously going to pack clothing, he just had priorities. Like making sure their whole sex toy collection would fit into his suitcase, not to mention two of the biggest bottles of lube he’d been able to find.
“Take the batteries out of anything that vibrates,” Shane called. Ilya rolled his eyes. What was he, an amateur? “Do you think I should bring two pairs of walking shoes or is one enough?”
“How many walking tours are we going on?”
“I don’t know.”
“How do you not know? What have you been doing for the past month?”
“Research! But I didn’t book anything yet in case we decide we want to just sit by the pool for ten days instead.”

Summary
It’s Hollander’s work. Ilya knows it with one glance. The structure is too orderly, laid out neatly according to plan. There are redundancy loops and opposing threads twisted together for stability. It’s precise, complex, beautiful to witness. It will be a fucking nightmare for Ilya to pick apart.
This is why the time war has lasted so long; why it feels unending. Every action Ilya takes will be countered by a Voyageur. Every one of their moves will be undone in turn.

Summary
I've been ruminating on the different criticisms I've seen about "The Long Game" and my own complicated relationship with this book. I read The Long Game in the week between episodes 5 and 6 of the show, after gobbling up Heated Rivalry the week before. I wanted desperately to know what happened to Shane and Ilya, and as a non-hockey fan, I saw the then-conclusion (this was before Unrivaled was announced) to Shane and Ilya's story as emotional, character-driven, and ultimately hopeful. Is it my favorite queer romance novel? No. Do I like it? Yes. However, this isn't about whether TLG is a good book or not, but whether the ending is actually satisfying the narrative themes set up throughout Heated Rivalry, the other Game Changers books, and TLG itself.
