Kojiro still hasn’t quite landed back in his body yet, hadn’t for the whole ride to the hospital. He can vaguely hear a nurse giving gentle instruction, catching disjointed snatches about “nausea” and “blurry vision,” and something about memory and balance. He’s doing his level best to listen, he swears, but focus is proving elusive when he still has the phantom sensation of Kaoru’s dead weight in his arms.

“You know how cats purr?” Vash says finally. “Like when they’re happy or stre—”
“You’re purring because you got stabbed? Christ, Blondie, I knew you were a masochist but—”
“Not like that! Let me finish!”
Or, cats purr when they feel happy and safe or are in pain and need to self-soothe. Vash does the same. But Vash doesn’t have many moments where he feels happy and safe, so Wolfwood and Meryl only ever hear him purr when he’s injured or hurting. The first time they hear him purr from happiness, they panic.

Summary
They always come and get him, no matter how tired he is, no matter how long it takes to rouse him. He understands, and never begrudges them for it. The Plants are important, and Vash is an important part of fixing them.
But sometimes, treacherously, he wishes they would try to handle the problem on their own, that they would let him sleep.
Healing a Plant, for Vash, means taking its pain away. But that pain has to go somewhere, and he is the only Plant who is able to take it.
