Summary
The kid claps a hand over his mouth. His eyes are huge and sparkling with something that looks like excitement or mischief, probably both.
"Sorry, sorry," he whispers loudly. Then he leans forward, like he's about to share a secret. "You're a hunk, right?"
Buck chokes on nothing. "I. What?"
"A hunk," the kid repeats. "You know, a hunk."
"I..." Buck has no idea what's happening. "Sure? I guess? I mean, I've been told... I work out sometimes—"
"Perfect!" The kid is already digging around in his backpack. He pulls out a slightly crumpled rectangle of cardstock and presents it to Buck with great ceremony. "This is for you."
It's a handmade card written in crayon, blue crayon. The handwriting is careful but wobbly, the letters all different sizes.
My dad likes boys and is single. He is a HERO and fights fires like Superman. He is a hunk. If intrested, please contact Chris Diaz.

Summary
Christopher peered at him, his eyes bigger through his lenses. “Why?”
Buck nearly choked. “Why? Why… what? I mean, I’m bisexual, if that’s what you’re—”
“Oh, no.” Christopher shook his head, “I just meant, if you’re dating men, why aren’t you dating Dad?” Which simply did not help Buck’s choking problem.
Buck really, truly had never pictured Eddie’s son asking him these questions, specifically why he wasn’t dating Eddie.
“Uh— your Dad isn’t— we’re not—”
“Oh.” A pause.
“I don’t want you to date Dad.”

Summary
By the time Fiona is seventeen years old, her mother has been gone for over a year, her father is absent more often than he is not, and she has become the de facto head of the Gallagher household.
To be entirely fair, she has always kind of been the one who kept the family going. She has experience with taking care of things. She juggles it all—the kids, the bills, her father—without complaint. She drops out of school, works three jobs, cooks, cleans, keeps everything going.
It’s when she’s seventeen, though, that it all comes crashing down.
Or: Fiona exhausts herself working to take care of everyone while sick. Her kids turn the tables and take care of her instead.
