    In the early days of the Justice League, Bruce is out more and more frequently on League missions, and Dick (age 13) is growing more and more restless and lonely stuck at home. His friends can't know he's Robin, and there are no superheroes Dick's age--or so he thinks, until Bruce receives a call from Barry, desperately seeking mentorship advice. Dick asks to meet the Flash's new sidekick, but Bruce refuses; a fight ensues, ending in Dick getting grounded. One week in Gotham off patrol, and then two weeks alone, far from Gotham... at a little family farm in Smallville, Kansas.

    And hey, if a certain Midwestern speedster sidekick just so happens to turn up, that'd be just fine. Or would it?

    The staff meeting after Cat had broken her foot had involved a lot of reassigning, since she couldn’t exactly do the usual society beat with her foot in a boot. So much that Clark hadn’t really thought twice when Perry had said “and Kent, you’ll take the new Wayne foundation piece,” because sure, he liked working the philanthropy stories occasionally. It wasn’t until they’d gotten back to their desks that Lois had burst into a fit of snickering and said “oh, I would pay money to see how you’re going to handle Bruce Wayne for two weeks,” and Clark had realized how majorly screwed he was.

    On a two-week assignment, Clark does his best to figure out Bruce Wayne. Bruce does his best to make sure he can't. Unfortunately, they're just too good at working together, even when they don't know it.

    After biting into the bottom of his cone, Wally glanced down at Dick’s shoes. They were a simple pair of black converse with white shoelaces. Wally looked to his own shoes, which were a bright pair of red runners with orange shoelaces. Wally hummed. Then an idea struck him. “Dude, let’s switch shoelaces,” he said.

    Dick snorted, looking over at him with a quirked, questioning eyebrow. “What?”

    “Yeah, let’s switch shoelaces!” Wally’s eyes lit up as he began to like the idea even more. “But only on one shoe. Let’s switch shoelaces on one shoe.”

    “Why?” Dick laughed.
