“Good evening. I’m Charles,” he offers his hand, which Max takes and for a second, Charles thinks he’s going to kiss the back of it. Some muscle spasms in the tight grip, rough velvet against soft skin. When Charles gets his hand back, it feels like he lost a finger or two in the fight.

“What’s your poison, Charles?” Max asks, settling on the barstool like it’s not designed to be the most uncomfortable chair in the world.

“Cyanide, usually. I’ll settle for a gin tonic for now.”

“You cannot rank us equally,” Charles says, with a head jerk at Max. “Who of the two of us would be the better boyfriend?”

“Why do you care, Charles?” Daniel asks, grinning.

“Well, because it’s obviously me, right?”

An honest-to-God squawk of indignation leaves Max’s lips at this question, the first sound he’s actually made throughout this entire discussion. “What do you mean ‘obviously’?” he demands, sitting forward.

“Well, no offence, mate, but you’re not exactly well-known for your success in dating,” Charles points out.

A low fire ignites behind Max’s eyes as he stares Charles down from across the table, lips pursed. “Just because I do not parade my partners around the paddock for the world to drool over does not mean I have any less success in dating than you, mate.” He bites out the last word like an insult.

    Summary

When the photo with the ball kids was called, Charles was ushered right next to Sebastian, a stroke of luck from a God he didn’t fully believe in, his nose filling with the acrid smell of sweat and clay from the man, yet Charles wished he could move closer, and closer. He didn't. He stayed a safe distance and smiled for the photograph, his eyes focused on catching the grin Sebastian had plastered on his face in his periphery. Charles knew then that he would do anything to play Sebastian, play him on this court, hug him across the net the way so many had done, hold him closer than the others before.

Charles had never brought up that day to Seb, his Seb, the Seb that sat down next to him on the practice courts now.

“If you’re dressed like that, it’d be a shame to waste it on this line,” Max said, eyes flicking deliberately over Charles. “You could come with me. I promise this time you’ll actually get in.”

She looked at the line of people standing across the road. Charles turned her head to the side, tucking a few strands of hair behind her ear to better stare at the other woman.

There was also the fact that Charles would absolutely not have picked this outfit just to go back to her dorm and peel it off in defeat.

“Okay,” she said, slipping her phone back into her purse. “Why not?”

    “Lando won.”

Charles’ breath hitches, an uncomfortable knot appearing suddenly in his throat. He didn’t see the celebrations, but he can picture them because they’re what he’d do, he thinks about it all the time, the way he’d be unable to stop smiling and how he’d probably cry and how his family would hold him and his team would sing for him—

    “I know.”

Max’s face pulls down, and then the expression is gone.

“You’ve been spiralling about it for months,” Max says. His voice is oddly soft. “Every time we see each other, you are ranting about how unfair it is, that they don’t deserve that car. And now you have nothing to say?”

He hasn’t been spiralling. That’s ridiculous.

    “It is what it is.”
