    Chained to the Bone

A sequel to The East Palace.

After the palace, Gucheon and Saenggang set out for a temple in the south, where a monk of renown is said to be able to undo what cannot be undone. The road is long, and haunted, and neither of them is telling the other quite everything.

A slow-burn continuation exploring the price already paid and the ones still coming due.

    Summary

The palace gates closed behind them with a deep, resounding thud that seemed to linger in the warm spring air long after the sound itself had faded.

    Saeng-gang did not look back.

Perhaps she should have. Afterall, it had been her home for years before it ceased to be, the place where her life had been turned upside down more than once, where she'd found answers she hadn't known to seek and far more questions than she'd ever wanted. It deserved, perhaps, one final glance before she left it all behind.

Instead, her eyes settled on the broad back of the man walking a few paces ahead of her.

Gu-cheon neither slowed down nor hesitated after stepping beyond the palace gates. He simply adjusted the straps of the bundle containing everything he owned – which, she couldn't help noticing, was alarmingly little for a journey in general, but more so for one of unknown length – and continued down the wide street leading away from the palace with long, hurried steps.

It struck her, not for the first time, that he had an extraordinary talent for making things look easy and uncomplicated.

She thinks back to the day she was at the candy seller's stall, when she first saw him again after many winters. When he cut down the two Japanese men in front of her, staining himself with the colour of their deaths.

Gaze dark, unnerved, dangerous and unflinching.

She had known at that instance, that she hated him.

She detested him so wholeheartedly, and it was why she miscalculated just how much she was fooling herself.
