Summary
The adrenaline of the summer is over, and Conrad is starting his first year of college. With his parents getting a divorce, his mother going through experimental cancer treatment, his brother beginning a downward spiral, and his relationship with Belly suddenly changed, there's only so much Conrad can take before he breaks. He's just trying to hold on for as long as possible, relying on Cleveland's advice to get him through. If he had it his way, he'd bury all his feelings and never bring them up again, unwilling to burden anyone else, but college (and a few new friends) have other ideas.

Summary
These days, Kiara wakes with the sun and does yoga on the back porch of the rented house she’s deemed Pogue House. She has granola and cut fruit for breakfast, does crosswords with Pope, watches marine biology documentaries on the flat screen TV, and circles JJ like an animal, trying and failing to find the right moment to talk.
He hasn’t been ignoring her so much as deflecting, a skill she never used to notice but now does with painful clarity. When Luke was still around, JJ would tilt his head to hide a bruise; now, he cracks a joke when she asks him how he’s doing, changes the topic whenever she tries to touch on this tenuous thing between them. She knows he tries to engage—she can see him forcing himself still when she draws near, jaw working and hands twitching—but then he blurts out something impulsive and the moment passes and Kiara is left to wonder if she’ll ever hear him say I love you again.

Relief momentarily takes his breath away, stopping his heart and restarting it again at a stuttering speed. He suddenly feels a little unsteady on his feet. “She’s still here.”
Mike studies JJ’s face with an expression that’s impossible to read. He nods once. “For now, at least.”
Something tightens around JJ’s throat as he feels his fists clenching at his side, not fully trusting himself to speak yet. Mike is still watching him with those dark, steady eyes. “Did you think we’d take her without saying goodbye?”
The response leaves his mouth before he even has a chance to think. “Yes.”
Mike laughs once, loud and empty. “Same way y’all did, I guess.”
or: When the Maybank kid shows up in the middle of the night, begging for Kiara to stay in the Kildare, all Mike can think about is how much he reminds him of himself.

Enough that she knows his name is JJ Maybank, that he mostly hangs out here because he’s good friends with Cleo, and that he will lend you his zippo lighter when you’re sharing cigarettes in the back alley, but will keep his eyes on you like a hawk until you give it back.
That’s nowhere near enough for him to ask her what time she gets off so casually, and certainly not enough for him to call her babe.
