They’d been on the road for a little over an hour when Gris’s voice buzzed over Enjin’s collar:
“Enjin, is Zanka in your car?”
(Gris’s voice through the collar was unusually urgent, for such a stupid question).
“He’s in your car,” Enjin replied calmly, not taking his eyes off the rumbling road ahead.
Gris’s comm link was still open (Enjin could hear some indistinct but frantic-sounding chatter from Follo and some of the other Supporters in the background), but the man himself made no reply.
“He’s in your car, isn’t he?” repeated Enjin. His eyes reflexively flicked up to the mirror, to the empty seat behind the front passenger seat that was usually (if unofficially) reserved for Nijiku Zanka.
“…We thought he was in your car.”

…I lost.
Zanka slipped in and out of focus, the smell of rot and poison thick in the cavernous air around him.
I lost.
The two words resonated in his head, in his core, in the stinging of his wounded leg and abdomen, over and over and over again.
I lost.
Above him, Jabber loomed over his shoulders, smiling with glee and dancing gracefully from foot to foot and messing around with Zanka’s beloved Assistaff while Zanka lay helpless on the ground, unable to so much as roll over.
…I lost.

Megumi eyes the papers, heartbeat quickening. He picks up the first one. It’s heavy, thick. Light doesn’t pass through, and the bold title at the top seems to leer at him.
'Adoption Order', it reads.
“This looks real,” Megumi says.
Gojo sips on his lemonade. His blindfold is around his neck, and the sunlight snags against the blue of his eyes. He’s beaming, proud.
“It is.”
Something in Megumi's chest explodes. Shatters. The shrapnel guts him, and his hands work against the paper. He tells himself not to rip it, but a fine tear spreads under his fingers.
“I said to bring fake ones.”
"Megumi-"
"I don't want this. I told you I don't want this! What the hell's wrong with you?"

When Megumi calls Gojo asking for fake adoption papers, the last thing he expects is for him to bring real ones.
And the last thing Gojo expects is for Megumi to refuse.
AKA: Megumi refuses to be adopted by Gojo, and the fallout forces them to figure out what they mean to each other.

Summary
His observations passed over Enjin and Riyou frequently, but he scrutinized them far less than anyone else. They were the ones who believed in him, who gave him the courage to climb out of the dank well he planned to rot away in. Trust came naturally between the trio, and Zanka understood that Enjin had known Riyou for far longer than he had. It made sense if they seemed closer to each other than they were to him. Zanka was nothing but logical. He knew better than to be jealous of such foolish things.
And then he stumbled upon Enjin braiding Riyou’s hair.
Zanka, the new guy, didn't get special displays of affection yet. He understood that perfectly. And that was fine, obviously. He didn't need special displays of affections, like hair braiding and head pats and stupid, warm embraces.

Or, Zanka is new to the Cleaners and can't help but notice the way Enjin treats him differently than Riyou.
