“I can’t get any aid except for unsubsidized loans unless I have a child, get married, or turn 24.” Lance groaned loudly. “I can’t afford my last two semesters if I don’t qualify for aid. What am I gonna do, drop out for two years and just hang out until I turn 24?”
“Get married then,” said Keith dismissively.
Keith was so accustomed to tuning out Lance’s chatter and answering with the occasional ‘mm-hm’ or ‘sure’, that silence actually had him looking up from his reading. He found Lance staring right back at him, an uncharacteristically contemplative look in his eye.
“Why don’t we get married?” he said slowly, sounding the words out.

Summary
Keith crashed in the wrong place at an absolutely wrong time.
Keith barely gets a second to get a knee up before two more vines shoot out from the shrubs and wrap tightly around his legs. Slightly panicked, Keith twists around the slice at those as well, but more emerge from the plant with each one wrapping around his wrists. The one wrapped around his left wrist curls up and through his fingers, wedging them off of his bayard's handle. His bayard hits the ground with a soft thud and fizzles back into its regular form as the vines yank Keith down onto his side.
