Five looked up and stared at the single person who could stop the apocalypse, objectively the least powerful of the academy including Vanya- fuck, he wouldn’t be able to talk to her- and the one now bestowed with Five’s knowledge and task of saving the world. Klaus stopped his mumbling and stared right back, trembling, eyeliner screwy, and spoke in unison with the stray word that slipped off of Five’s numb tongue.
“Shit.”

A few miles out, there was a little orange light flickering. Far too big and color-saturated to be a star. Too low to the ground. Ray squinted at it, then realized that it was a fire. Once he saw that, he could make out the silhouette of what was burning: a farm house.
That’s a beacon, he thought deliriously. Untethered dream logic. He could somehow see the rising smoke through the sheets of rain, through the darkness of night. It was a signal. It was for him.
