She did not speak when Fatima talked about Muhammad. Fatima, to her credit, never pushed her to; perhaps she appreciated the silence, the invitation to share with Töregene a glimpse into her old life, the same way Töregene would try to tell Fatima about hers. Or perhaps Fatima thought Töregene did not know what to say, and, in all her graces, did not push the matter, because the act of lending a listening ear was enough.
It worked out, because Töregene actually had a lot to say, and everything rolling under the stiffened shape of her tongue were thoughts Töregene knew better than to say aloud.
There were the usual platitudes, of course. I’m sorry and I share your rage and I miss my husband too. That was fine, but also words chosen deliberately, with the careful hand of picking the prettiest pearls from the market. Töregene did not want to tilt open all the jumbled wares inside her chest and let their weight fall onto Fatima’s shoulders, crushing her.
Töregene did not want Fatima to hear: you are lucky you never married.
