"Near," he mumbles around what feels like a tube in his mouth.
Near averts his gaze immediately. "Please don't talk."
"Don't tell me what to do," Mihael says. It's a joke but Near doesn't seem to get it.
"Don't talk."
Distantly he can hear beeping. Nothing hurts. It's weird. It's nice. Looking at Near always used to hurt.

“You were stationed at the Sakura TV station with a gun.” L flicks his gaze up to the ceiling. “You had been given permission to shoot. But you drew too late, and Higuchi escaped. That was a perfect opportunity, Aiber, and you wasted it.”
“Ah, yeah. That’s my bad,” Aiber says, tossing the words off his tongue with a careful amount of carelessness. “It won’t happen again.”
“No,” L says, making direct eye contact again. It’s awful. He’s reminded of gunpowder burn. “I’d like to ensure it doesn’t.”
(L tries an unconventional method of ERP: giving his pet con artist a gun.)

“It’s strange, isn’t it,” says Kiyomi idly after Lidner’s escorted her into the car. “That Amane didn’t show.”
“It is,” Lidner agrees carefully, not looking at her — as usual, she has one eye out the window. On the lookout for her safety, Kiyomi supposes. She tucks a sardonic smile behind her teeth.
“And as your employer,” Kiyomi continues, “I wonder why you left so suddenly just an hour before the show?”
(Kiyomi rings in the new year with the woman she knows is here to dethrone her.)
