i am a huge sucker for found family stories
but tl;dr is tbate rewrite, starring the author's self-insert (sort of, toren becomes his own character). many non-characters from the original get really fleshed out too - and just, i think DN captures that lightning in a bottle vol. 8-9 got while very much improving on the original story as a whole. specifically character relationships or lack thereof, and making the world a believable setting/touching parts the original never got to. it's a really cool premise and i'm kind of sad that it never finished but i liked it nonetheless

quite rare that a fic will hook me into an entirely new fandom
genuinely had no clue qud even existed before reading this, and mokou being a standin for the player makes so much sense. she's probably my favourite touhou character yet despite being super popular dedicated stories starring her are a rarity - character studies on touhou are kinda sparse anyway, but this one is totally my favourite out of the ones I know exist. there's just so much about it I like. i don't know quite how else to describe it other than it pulled me in and had me in a trance visualising what was going on the whole time, over a couple of days as the second part was nearing completion when i found it. for about 16 hours though my sleep-deprived brain lived in qud and experienced a heavy dose of immortal angst, which is something I wish I could experience blind again
