Summary
The handler’s expression is different now, something akin to sadness on his face. Sadness? Handlers have never expressed that in front of the Asset before. Can he tell that the Asset is malfunctioning?
Punishment is surely imminent.
But instead of striking the Asset across the face, or shoving it roughly against the wall, or forcing it to its knees — the handler crouches down again. Crouches down in front of the standing Asset, looking up at it with that same sad face.
The Asset feels its heart rate quicken in fear. Something is very wrong.Or,
The Avengers are alerted by Nick Fury about a recently-recovered HYDRA operative that is being kept in SHIELD custody. Steve, knowing how horrifically SHIELD has treated brainwashed prisoners of HYDRA in the past, appears and demands that they hand the prisoner over to them. The long road to recovery ensues.

Steve wild frantic eyes stared up at Bucky, a silent plea begging for help. Anything, he’d do literally anything to magically feel better. Taking both of Bucky's hands into his own, Steve felt desperate for any and every amount of comfort he could get.
“I know you’re scared but keep trying for me, babydoll.” Two sweet delicate kisses to Steve’s upper jaw, Bucky's nose trailing over his neck, exhales ghosting smooth sensitive skin. “Match my breathing.”

It takes too long for Bucky to recover the breath that caught in his lungs somewhere between that fateful no and when Steve stopped talking. Right. Steve stopped talking.
“Felt like what?” Bucky prompts. He wonders, vaguely, if Steve noticed the crack in his voice.
“Like I didn’t belong.”
I don’t belong.
“Like I was living a life that wasn’t meant for me.”
But I thought maybe...
“That wasn’t mine.”
I thought I belonged with you.

Bucky reflects on his final days with Steve, tries to text Sam back, uses Google way too much, and has a very, very long day.

Summary
After the Blip, James Barnes was given a second chance he didn't deserve. Refusing therapy and thus barred from returning to the military, he struggles to make ends meet working as a bartender. The bar is owned by the Savage Crims gang leader, Mr. Rumlow, who takes an unhealthy liking to the seemingly meek young omega. Tired, apathetic, and hurting for money- Jamie finds himself submitting to the alpha's advances, which only seem to escalate the easier he makes it for Rumlow. As a super-soldier who could kick Rumlow's ass without breaking a sweat, Jamie makes it very easy.
A (somewhat) Endgame Compliant Bucky Barnes meets a 616-inspired Brock Rumlow who remains a very bad guy but at least he's not Hydra.
