She still barely believed it.
Helen delicately slid out of bed, ignoring the faint whine she heard from her sleeping beauty, and headed downstairs to her office. She sat down heavily in the rolling leather chair, as she had been doing every night for the past three weeks. There wasn't enough time in the day to get everything right.
If it wasn't perfect, she could lose Madeline.
She stayed there until the sun came up.

“A road trip?” Helen had asked.
Madeline nodded, grinning. “Yeah, just me and you and the open road! Doesn’t that sound fun?”
Helen thought it sounded like a recipe for disaster. “I don’t know, Mad,” she’d said. “Where would we even go? It’s the middle of winter.”
“Don’t worry about that,” Madeline brushed off, shrugging her shoulders. “Just let me handle all of it.”
It was a horrible idea, Helen had been sure of it. The two of them had been going crazy enough as it was, living together again, and that would surely only be magnified in a cramped car. However, Madeline looked so excited, and maybe a little nervous if Helen thought about it hard enough, and Helen was always so terrible at denying Madeline anything.
After a long moment, she had just sighed and accepted defeat. “Alright, Mad. We’ll go on your trip.”
She hoped it would be worth the squeal and quick little happy claps Madeline let out.
