Kurosawa’s is a small, serpentine eastern dragon named Kanpai — charismatic, perceptive, and deeply frustrated by seven years of watching its human consciously restrain his feelings for Adachi.
Adachi’s companion is a freshwater turtle named Nibby, calm and gentle and entirely unaware that it's the center of Kanpai’s attention.
As Kanpai grows increasingly bold in its attempts to befriend (aka flirt with) Nibby at the office, Kurosawa finds himself fighting a losing battle to keep his feelings contained.
Especially when Adachi remains oblivious — and Kanpai absolutely refuses to be.

He stands, half slouched against the frame of her door as if he might collapse. His ragged, hurried breaths make for the only sound in the dark hallway of her dorms, which remain blessedly silent in spite of the nightly disturbance. Maomao should have gone to bed a long time ago, but she lost track of time, leafing through one of the books she borrowed from the medical office.
Would she have heard Jinshi knock on her door if she had?
Her eyes scan over his dishevelled features and she blindly reaches for his wrist, pulling him inside. The muted thump of the door closing behind them sounds like an ominous warning about her allowing an unmarried man inside her chambers in the middle of the night.
or: Jinshi knocks on her door in the middle of the night with a discovery. Maomao lets him in.

Well aware of the trouble his appearance and reputation brought him, Jinshi knew to make use of a good amount of disguises and masks if he was to successfully navigate his duties to the country of Li. It didn’t quite stop people from noticing him anyways, nor the way he interacted with the young apothecary he always seemed to be around.
Or: five times other people unknowingly observed Maomao interacting with one of Jinshi’s disguises + one time someone saw her interacting with the real him.

“Maomao?” He presses, fingers closing over hers and lowering their joined hands to her lap, and she blinks in surprise at the use of her name. “What is it? What’s wrong?”
“Their technique is sloppy,” she answers honestly. “I feel strain on my heart. They should have targeted the nervous system instead.”
Master Jinshi stares at her like she’s spoken a foreign language he can’t even begin to try and understand. She tries to explain.
“Certain snake venoms cause coagulation of the blood, which could have been effective and made the blood unable to move through my veins, but if the end result is simply making my heart stop beating by targeting the muscles involv-”
“Maomao,” Master Jinshi says, very calmly, “I need you to stop speaking now.”
(an assassin tries to kill jinshi with a poisoned blade that gets maomao instead) (she is obviously much less concerned about this than everyone else)
