If he will wake up one day and not feel like the world has ended when he remembers why the other side of the bed is empty. If he will ever stop hoping, wishing, dreaming, for a miracle that might never happen. If it is even possible for him to stop hoping. To stop wanting. To stop loving. Alex wonders if he will ever stop feeling like his chest has been carved open. He has an imprint of Henry in every fiber of his being, and he does not think he will ever be free of it.

Summary
Not even thinking about the time, he moves over to the Phone app and hits June’s contact before bringing the phone up to his ear with a shaky hand. He hadn’t even realized it started trembling again. It rings about four times before June answers, voice creaky. June has clearly been sleeping, and Alex only feels a little bad because the building panic wins out.
“Alex? What the hell? Is everything okay?” June asks when Alex doesn’t say anything, just breathes heavily into his phone’s mic.
“June.” His eyes well up with tears at the familiar voice. “I don’t know what’s going on.” Turns out he needs his sister in every fucking universe. Alex moves back toward the stove to work on the drink to distract himself as the kid watches him carefully. He knows where he’d keep the saucepans if it were up to him, so that’s the first drawer he tries, and sure enough.
There is rustling on the other side, June probably sitting up in bed. “Hey, can you tell me what’s happening?” Her voice is softer now than when she’d answered, the one she uses when Alex is really upset or spiraling into a panic attack. And maybe he is. Fuck.

Summary
Henry quietly takes his shoes off and places them at the door, then heads into the living room. There, he spots Alex.
Alex is sitting on the floor in front of the TV, staring off into space. He’s chewing on the side of his thumb, petting David with his other hand while slowly rocking himself back and forth in what looks like a self-soothing motion.
Or: Henry walks in on Alex regressing for the first time.

Summary
It has been three years since they were outted and Henry and Alex have finally settled into a groove that works well for them, except for the fact that it feels like they're always having to steal time together. Queen Mary constantly coming up with excuses to get Henry out of public events with Alex isn't helping, and Alex is done with it. After a long conference in Tokyo that Henry couldn't attend, Alex's flight home being delayed is the last straw and he calls Henry to say they need to figure out a better way to do this, to which Henry agrees. But fate has other ideas. Alex's flight goes missing somewhere over the Pacific, no trace of it to be found, leaving Henry and Alex's family struggling to not lose hope while unable to do anything.

Summary
So he reaches and searches for the prior conversation where he was told about his memory loss and the man beside him. He checks the nooks and crannies of his mind, desperately hoping that it hasn’t failed him. That the effort he’s put into maintaining his intelligence over the years has been worth it because this time, he can be better.
But, he finds nothing.
It’s empty. Blank. Scattered and useless.
Alex looks down at his lap, at his legs hidden by starchy white bed sheets. “I don’t understand,” he whispers, tearfully. “I don’t remember. Why can’t I remember?”
