Ace had to keep good on his promise to Luffy. He couldn't go after Blackbeard and throw his life away when the only brother he had left was counting on him living. That meant Blackbeard would roam free and Ace wasn't going to stop him. As much as it hurt to let Thatch's death go, he knew if he died too it would hurt Luffy even more.

Summary
Soul marks are the tool of Balance, scholars say, and the way Fate can make things right, give just a little hope when all seems lost. When lives are in peril, when mortal danger is at hand, a soul mark will appear and soulmates will have just those few extra second to turn the wheel of Fate, to undo what once would have been set in stone. At least that is what Shanks knows, what his Father - Captain had taught him when he was only knee high and enthralled with the dark words scribbled on the older man's left arm.
Romantic bonds become black. We don’t know why it happens like this, it just does. Familial bonds become dark blue, like the Sea when she is at her worst, churning in the throes of her anger. And platonic bonds become a soft blue, the caress of the waves under the Sunny sky. It is as it has always been. What cannot be denied is thus: when one’s soul mate is in mortal danger, a red mark will appear, crimson as blood, sometimes bleeding, sometimes burning, depending on the depth of the bond between the soulmates.
