Summary
Perched high in the trees, he waits, eyes fixed on the flow of the river. Something rustles in the brush, and his eyes snap in the direction of the sound. He holds his breath as three massive brown bears, one adult and two cubs, lumber out of the trees and onto the riverbank. The adult steps forward, surveying their surroundings, while the cubs splash into the water gleefully. They rumble and roughhouse while their mother dips her head towards the river, looking for any signs of movement underneath.
The Kodiak brown bear was thought to have gone extinct a decade ago, as reported by Fédération when the last breeding pair died in captivity. But here they are, hunting for salmon deep in the forests of Celius.
Survivors, the boy thinks. Just like me.

The day after the Jedi Temple on Lothal collapses, Ezra walks to the plains outside the mountains. / A month after Ezra disappears, Sabine takes a speeder and drives out to the mountains.
He leaves his lightsaber behind. There are too many memories attached to it, and he’s so desperate to shed the weight of it all. His connection to the Force has never been stronger, to the point where it's almost too much, and Ezra just wishes it would let him breathe. / She takes his lightsaber with her—she doesn’t think she’ll ever be able to go anywhere without it again. What if she finds him? What if he shows up without warning? She needs to be able to give it back as soon as she sees him. She won’t let him down.

Cere offered something he didn’t know he wanted until she dangled it in front of him, and he crumbled like a sandcastle even in the face of her remarkably evasive explanation for why she’s no longer a Jedi. He doesn’t trust her yet, but he likes her nonetheless. The Bogano breeze toys with his hair while Cal watches the sunset alongside a little droid who’s been glued to Cal’s side since the moment he fixed BD’s damaged leg. It’s not bad at all. He could get used to this.
Unfortunately, Cal is pretty sure he’s dying.

Bode clears his throat, barely audible, but it snaps Cal out of his concentrated peace. His eyes, startlingly green and something Bode will never get used to, pierce Bode clean like a knife. Bode has to scramble to throw up a shield to guise himself before he feels Cal’s quiet presence reach out for him.
It’s warm. Bode wants to instinctively reach back, return Cal’s gentle prodding with something real. For a dangerous, desperate moment, Bode sincerely considers coming clean right then and there. I work for the Empire. I want to leave. I want to join you. I don’t want to deceive you anymore.
“You have a scratch there,” Bode says instead. His voice is too quiet for his liking. “Should get it patched up.”

Not long after they meet, while Greez is still adjusting to having a teenaged Jedi and an obnoxious little droid aboard the Mantis, Cal admits he occasionally experiences seizures because of the Force echoes. Greez isn’t exactly thrilled, but whatever. They don’t sound too serious or frequent, so he’ll deal, and it’s kind of nice the kid’s beginning to trust them enough to tell them this stuff, right?
Months later, he discovers (in the worst way possible, of course) Cal might have omitted a few crucial details from that confession.
