The looks are ten times worse today. They aren't looking anymore, they're leering. It's enough that Edward almost admits defeat and heads home, but the deep shame he feels at the implication of weakness is so painful that he doesn't think he can do it. He can't accept what Roy had said. He can't accept that as a possibility.
