    Summary

But Parrot has always had a habit of lying to himself, a habit only worsened with the passage of time, and the empty bleakness of having everything taken away from him, then returned, then taken all over again.

Or: Wifies is dead. This is a truth. Wifies is gone. This is a lie.

If Wifies knew how the game was going to end before they even played it, Parrot, too, knows now.

They always knew each other best, anyway.

This was once the shade. He used to be the shade. These burnt hands and those empty eyes and these unbreathing lungs used to be the place where Parrot would rest and hide from all the brutal cruel unfeeling terror of the world because Wifies knew him Wifies loved him Wifies would protect him. Safe, he used to be safe, he used to be so so so safe here right here.

"I see," he states, and passes her a piece of bread from his inventory. Wifies waits a couple of minutes for her to take the piece and put it into her mouth with fervor; It's barely enough to get even a small bit of her hunger satiated, and her cheek still burns. "You better now?" No!

What can she say? What's she allowed to say? "Not really," be nice, please be nice. She should probably stop expecting Wifies to be nice to her anymore. "Maybe if you, like, gave me more—"

"That was enough," he cuts off. "Do you need help with that, then?"

    Spidey stares at him, "What?"

In which Wifies helps Spidey with her wound.

It takes Spidey a second, but right after she moves right where Wifies wants her to; docile, like a dog. Soon enough they're sitting on a some apartment's rooftop, high enough for nobody sane to not sneak up on them. Spidey's eyes dart around back and forth; a bird in a particularly stuffed cage; the edge is close and dangerous. It would be absurdly easy to throw her off the roof.

"Your hand is bleeding," his voice is clear and fond, a lantern in the dark, and the skin-on-skin contact scorches her with a million of tiniest ambers; it's mostly a pleasant feeling. He's warm. Warmer than 4C ever ran. "You alright? What's up."

"Oh, oh," Spidey giggles, strained. She chants then, "Haha, y-yeah, yeaahh, I'm good, happens all the time, I didn't, I didn't notice. It just. Reminded me. Of— You know. 4C."

    He hums, "Is that so?"

Spidey and Wifies' trip takes a bit longer. They make due.

"I'm scared. I don't want this, I don't want to be here, I want to go home," but there's no home for her, not anymore. She was a fool to ever think otherwise. "I, I want to go home."

"I know, I know," he soothes, feather-soft, and places a hand on her head, as if placating an animal. It's working.

    Summary

Memories, instinct. Words become memories become instinct. The king, trapped in between tightly packed neurons and this blood brain barrier, has been subjected to all of Derek’s thoughts, of Avery’s name, of Avery again and again and again.

But the human imagination is endless, if not eternal. Through repetition, a word is a memory. The king’s words seep into perception, into the past, present, future. Until Avery becomes a synonym for guilt. Regret.

In the gap between past and future, Derek reminisces and holds on tight.

Avery, he thinks as the light on his computer thrums in the darkness. A-ve-ry.

The patronymic name from father to son, king to prince. A wisdom of the ages, a hope bestowed.
