Redemption. People crave it, wanting to be seen as a saint among the sinners of the world. It can cause someone to lose track of who they really are, twisting their perspective on things and making them into the devil instead of what they truly desire.
Being a good person. It’s a difficult task to achieve. Theo notices how Matt’s been struggling with this concept lately and corners him, making him confront his own personal demons.

Summary
Matt’s one rule he made at the start of all this mess was to not form connections. There was no need to grow fond of things you may lose or people who could hurt you in several ways. Hell, he even told his spy the same thing. But Smitty wasn’t as strong as Matt, it was a risky move to take Smitty on as his double agent for his own survival. Smitty grew close to the others, breaking their pact and especially breaking Matt’s rule. There was a punishment for this betrayal.
Matt was solid in his statement; there was no fucking use for friendships in the apocalypse.
So when he was suddenly feeling conflicted over Puffer being ambushed and attacked, it made him have an outburst.
“Why the fuck do I care so much?”

Summary
Droid spends time in the woods by the group’s base often, especially on days when tensions are running high between the others. He can’t help but feel like he should try to be more independent. More useful. More important to the group. He gets lost in his thoughts as he wanders between the trees. Sometimes Droid stays out in nature for hours on end, with nothing to keep track of time. He figures if no one notices he’s gone, then maybe his thoughts are right.
There’s usually only one person from the group who tends to notice his disappearances and knows where to find him.

After several arguments with Matt and other major incidents, things haven’t been quite the same. And yet Smitty is still being used as a spy purely for Matt’s benefit. What a selfish thing. Can’t Matt see that in times like this, at the end of the fucking world, sometimes it’s better to make alliances? Maybe Smitty wasn’t as much of a bastard as he thought.

Summary
John and Smitty both struggled with their injuries. You would think them both being caused by Matt would bring them closer, trauma always causes people to form closer bonds, right? Wrong. Smitty feels guilty for making John worry so much about his leg. He still feels guilty about what happened to John’s eye. Feels guilty about being a liability now. Feels guilty about all the betrayal he’s done to his friends that they’ve been completely oblivious to.
Guilt burns deep within his soul, igniting a flame that had long since burnt out since this whole spy shit first started.
A rift had started to form between himself and John and he didn’t want to lose him. Not after all their close calls. Smitty wants to find a way to close the gap that’s forming between the two. Luckily, being able to side with anyone he pleases allows for the perfect idea to form in Smitty’s mind.
