“You’re fond of him,” Xiao Wei says as they approach the doors of the Palace of Entertainment.
“You’ll have to clarify, I am fond of many,” James says as he opens the door for Xiao Wei. “After you, my dear princess,” he bows.
“It’s different with Sherlock, you cannot fool me James,” Xiao Wei states as she swishes on by, inside into the cooler lobby.
James’ grin twists a bit, going sharp as his eyes are going dark, eyes of a shark as Xiao Wei needlessly bleeds at a wound that shouldn't be touched. “Yes, yes, it is different with him. I tend to keep it that way.”

Or maybe Sherlock getting shot in front of James fucks him up more than he thought it would and it becomes everyone's Problem and doesn't entirely change the course of things, but dramatically changes their entire relationship.

Sherlock met James’s eyes again. He was silent for a minute, collecting his evidence, visiting all possibilities and eliminating them one by one.
“I…” Sherlock breathed, James raised an eyebrow. “I must be wrong. I must’ve missed something, it can’t be–”
“Once you have eliminated the impossible,” James cut in, “Whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth,”
Sherlock swallowed. James's eyes left his momentarily, tracing the movement of Sherlock’s throat and lingering on his lips before meeting his gaze once again.
“Me,” Sherlock breathed, voice shaking. “You want me,”__________________
Or, Sherlock cannot understand why James would stick around after the bombing. James challenges him to deduce it for himself.

Summary
Sherlock knew James took the formula. And he is afraid it could change everything that was going on between them. To sort this out, he needs to understand what it was from the start. Probably, if he understands, he'll see the way to fix whatever was going on.
Or the fix-it for every time Sheriarty should've kissed and the post-canon story of these two.
