Summary
“What did she look like?” asked Hollander.
“She was brunette,” said Ilya. Marleau’s eyes trailed along the hard lines of his traps, past the glint of his crucifix, the swells of his pectorals, towards the trail of hair disappearing into his shorts. They landed on the thickening outline of his cock. “Pretty little thing, with freckles. Big, brown dumb eyes, begging to be made to cry.”
Hollander’s breath hitched. Marleau realized, perhaps belatedly, that this was a game in which truth was incidental.
In 2014, Ilya and Marleau went to Paris on a girl to celebrate the Stanley Cup win. Ten years later, on a balmy evening spent in the Hollander-Rozanov Ottawa home, Marleau reminisces and, courtesy of Shane and Ilya, re-enacts.
It’s just a game of play pretend.

Summary
He was fine. He was just getting…used to not playing center anymore, used to not being captain, used to being introduced to a very established and genial dynamic, one that he wasn’t sure he really fit into.
They were all welcoming, bright smiles and slaps on the back when he had come in for their first practice, a respectable distance from Ilya, not wanting to draw more attention away from the work than necessary.
There had been some compliments about their wedding over the summer, chatter about Anya and a barbecue at Bood’s house before it got too cold, peals of laughter from every corner as one of the rookies asked Ilya if he was old enough to remember the JFK assassination. It was all tight knit, like a family dinner that Shane was standing outside of.
They seemed to like him, but he was pretty sure that it was just because they had to, because he was their captain’s husband, because he was good at hockey, because he would make them stronger as a unit. He didn’t think any of them would want him around if he wasn’t any of those things.
Or, Shane believes he should be happy, but his head can’t quite catch up.

Summary
Ilya was greedy. Possessive. He wanted more; proof of permanence.
He was turning over the idea in his mind – a new season, a new team, which meant new players Shane had never encountered before in certain ways. New people, sizing him up as they changed together regularly in dressing rooms. Men, looking Shane up and down appreciatively in the showers. Maybe the ring on Shane’s finger wouldn’t be enough. Maybe they’d get too presumptuous with his husband. Maybe Shane needed a more tangible indicator of not being theirs.
Ilya decides he should give Shane a new burn, and luckily his decisions are the only ones that matter.
