Summary
When the firefighter walks into Eddie's coffeeshop, Eddie immediately knows two things about him: he's not human, and he's the love of Eddie's life.
Oh, he knows a bunch of other things too, obviously. He's about thirty, a few months younger than Eddie himself. He has a scar on his throat, like he got stabbed there, and one of his legs has some metal rods in it that must have come from a bad injury. The guy doesn't know he's not human, which is a tricky thing to figure out, but Eddie's almost positive. Most of the non-humans he knows have always known they aren't people, but there are exceptions, and they tend to carry themselves differently. Ana before her first full moon as a werewolf had a very different vibe from Ana after.
The firefighter moves like he knows he doesn't belong, but not like he knows why. Like he's afraid of taking up space, afraid of being noticed.
As if Eddie is even capable of not noticing him.

Summary
Eddie really didn’t intend to keep it a secret for so long.
Especially not from Buck. Buck, who believes so strongly in the possibility of things beyond his own comprehension, who would never be freaked out by anything about Eddie. Buck who trusts him, who believes in the universe, who would be delighted to know that his best friend has real-life magic. It’s just—
All of the women in the Johansson family have magic. All of the women, that is, except for Adriana and Sophia.
Helena can’t explain it. It’s Eddie’s fault, of course, he’s the one who stole the magic which rightfully belonged to his sisters, but his mother has never quite pinned down how he managed that. Her own mother didn’t know why little six-month-old Eddie was able to make his bottle float, and she was dead before she could learn that both of her granddaughters had been born without magic.
According to historians, seiðr was a traditionally feminine religious practice among the Old Norse. According to Eddie’s mother, seiðr is the birthright of a woman and a woman only, and Eddie is an aberration.

Summary
“It was magic on him. Barely there, but I felt it. You used magic and restarted his heart.”
Buck told him more than once that anyone can do magic, even Catholic monotheist Edmundo Diaz can do magic if he tries hard enough, but Eddie’s never tried.
“No I didn’t.” Eddie rubs his eyes, trying to get the sound of breaking Buck’s ribs out of his ears. “If I did he'd be with us. He’d be fine.”
Maddie shook her head. She has a small smile, but it doesn’t fully go to her eyes. The smile and the sad eyes in combination, however, that’s one hundred percent Buck.
“No. I know magic. I felt it when I sat with him."
-
Or, Buck gets struck by lightning. Eddie wants Buck to wake up from a coma so he can say the things he never said. Maddie thinks Eddie can do more to help Buck than he realizes.

Summary
“Buck.”
Buck jolted out of sleep, groaning as he was ripped from a dream he can’t remember.
“Buck.”
Prying opened his eyes, Buck squinted in the bright glow that was hovering over his bunk. He had planned on catching a few hours of sleep on the forty-eight hours shift he was currently thirty-six hours into before the bell could ring again.
The resident ghost of fire station 118 had other plans.
